President’s Message
I’m truly honored and excited to be your president for the 2017-18 school year! If you are currently a member, then you recognize the importance of professional organizations, and we value your contributions. If you have arrived at this web site to investigate JCASL, I welcome you and urge you to consider becoming a member. More often than not, school librarians practice in isolation in their buildings. JCASL has a rich tradition of providing a strong network of collegial support to the school librarians in Jefferson County. Being a part of our community means you always have professionals at hand who understand your work, support your professional growth, and celebrate your accomplishments.
The Jefferson County Association of School Librarians is a district of the Kentucky Association of School Librarians (KASL) and a regional affiliate of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL). AASL is the only national professional membership organization dedicated to the needs of school librarians. Our parent organization is the American Library Association (ALA), of which the Kentucky Library Association (KLA) is our state chapter.
AASL serves more than 7,000 school librarians around the world, and has been a part of ALA since 1914, achieving division status in 1951. Over the years, AASL has championed our causes, and has provided us with guidelines and standards for school library programs, most notably Information Power, Online II: Essentials of a Model Library Media Program and our current Standards for the 21st Century Learner.
We are proud to be able to support our local school librarians as part of this outstanding national organization. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at jason.highley@jefferson.kyschools.us if you have questions or concerns, and I will do my best to connect you with all available resources.
Your colleague,
Jason Highley
